Bob Sherman has a strength of character and purpose that would make Spencer Tracy proud. But signing on to the crew of the yacht Bonito, he'll need every ounce of his strength and courage to overcome the forces arrayed against him - in Sea Fangs.

He'll take on the forces of nature - a hurricane smashing into the boat off the Venezuelan coast. He'll stand up to the forces of ignorance - Bonito's incompetent captain. He'll defy the forces of corruption - the boat's owner, who stripped him of his land years ago. And he'll fight the forces of evil - a ruthless band of pirates who take all aboard, including the owner's daughter, to the uncharted Island of Death.

His fate intertwined with a woman whose father stole everything he valued, Sherman is about to discover that there's one force as powerful, unpredictable and dangerous as the sea itself...the force of a beautiful woman's love.

Hubbard had vast experience at sea. By the time he'd written this story, he had traveled twice to China on Naval vessels, had signed on a twin-masted schooner plying the Chinese coast, and had organized a 5,000-mile expedition aboard a four-masted schooner. He had firsthand experience of the violence of the sea - and of the men who ply it - as he depicts in Sea Fangs.

"Sea Fangs"
by L. Ron Hubbard
Multi-cast performance
Produced by Galaxy Audio
approx 2 hours

In continuing my pulp fiction adventures with "Stories from the Golden Age," I've decided to go on a sea adventure with L. Ron Hubbard. This one is called "Sea Fangs," and let me warn you this one has got so much excitement that you will not want to stop listening.

Once again Galaxy Audio produces another audio book masterpiece. I've listened to enough Galaxy Audio productions of the old pulp fiction stories, that I've come to expect nothing but fun and excitement. The incidental music is perfect between chapters. The acting and narration are perfect for re-enacting this old pulp fiction novella but at the same time, with this one, they bring something extra that could almost place this story in modern times. This also can be attributed to the timeless writing by Hubbard in this novella. The cast consists of; Gino Montesinos, R.F. Daley, Shane Johnson, Jim Meskimen, Kristin Proctor and Phil Proctor. And finally with the added sound effects the whole production rounds out in an exciting, cinematic aural experience.

Bob Sherman, a seasoned sailor suddenly finds himself trying to save the ocean yacht, `Bonito' from capsizing in hurricane waters off Venezuela's coast, no thanks to the cocky and incompetent ship's captain. Sherman boarded the ship under a false name to seek revenge on the yacht's owner, Mr. Marmion. Marmion, with the support of corrupt officials, had stripped him of a highly profitable oil drilling business and taken his land years before. Sherman soon gets attentions of Phyllis Marmion, a raven-haired beauty and daughter of the yacht's owner. Phyllis recognizes Sherman from a party once thrown by her father before he cheated Sherman of his oil fields.

When the ship is attacked by modern pirates all are taken captive, after a short skirmish, in which Sherman shows to be an efficient marksman. The crew and passengers find themselves in a dungeon jail on an uncharted island known locally as the Island of Death, a place where no one escapes, and Sherman's futile efforts have marked him for an early death. To make matters worse Sherman was once a prisoner on this island and the locals recognize him and have some evil plans so that he cannot escape again. As they are being taken prisoner Sherman, with some quick thinking manages to save Phyllis by telling the leader of the pirates that she is a nun. How long she can carry this ruse is unknown but maybe just long enough to work out an escape plan.

With an exciting story about revenge, storms at sea, pirates and oil field millionaires L. Ron Hubbard's classic pulp story, "Sea Fangs," turned into audio theatre by Galaxy Audio, this is the most exciting 2 hours you can spend with out leaving home, or maybe making your commute a little more fun.

This exciting sea adventure is filled with action and fear, this story will keep you wondering what is going to happen next, as it is never what you think.

Years earlier, Sailor Bob Sherman had his land and business ripped away from him from Herbert Marmion, a true definition of a thief and a scoundrel. Because of this, Sherman is forced to live at sea. Now off the shores of Venezuela, a hurricane is stirring up, and Sherman needs to work fast to save the yacht he was hired to work on from capsizing.

While on the yacht Sherman has caught the eye of a beautiful raven-haired woman named Phyllis Marmion, but he knows nothing must come from it as she is the daughter of his enemy.

With all of this going on, you would think it couldn't get worse, but it does. The yacht is attacked by pirates and everyone is taken hostage. The pirates take all of the captors to the Island of Death and throws them into a dungeon. Sherman is all to familiar with this place, as he has been held there once before. Unfortunately, all of the natives know this too, making it almost impossible for him to ever escape.

The excitement just keeps going with this story, I found my self terrified at times, and cheering at others. L. Ron Hubbard has a way of adding those little twists to his stories that keeps you guessing right up to the end.

So if you are looking for an exciting sea adventure, then I completely recommend Sea Fangs.
Before there was the internet, television, video games, and cell phones in every home, the people of the 1930s and 1940s (otherwise known as the Golden Age) spent their time going to the theater, listening to the radio shows, and reading cheap novels and pulp fiction magazines. Many famous authors wrote countless short stories that were published in brown pulp paper magazines, including the late L. Ron Hubbard.

Galaxy Press has been releasing audiobooks versions of Hubbard's short stories for the past few years and they have kindly sent me a few free copies in exchange for my honest review. I had the privilege to listen to Sea Fangs, which originally appeared in the June 1934 issue of Five Novels.

Sea Fangs is a fast-paced action adventure with Bob Sherman, a sailor, who tries to save the yacht Bonito from being destroyed by a powerful hurricane off the shores of Venezuela. What is he doing on the yacht in the first place? Well, a few years earlier a man named Herbert Marmion greedily stole the land and the drilling business that belonged to Bob, who now finds himself on the very yacht owned by Herbert. The only thing that is on his mind is revenge. That is until he meets the stunning raven-haired Phyllis Marmion, who happens to be his enemy's daughter.

The hurricane is the least of his problems as the ship is attacked by bloody pirates and everyone aboard is kidnapped. Before he knows it, he is thrown into a dirty dungeon on the Island of Death.

The audiobook cover doesn't give the story justice as it looks like an old harlequin novel, so I wasn't too thrilled about listening to it. Let's just say my week has not been the greatest as there has been a death in my family, another family emergency, and my allergies have been acting up. I wasn't feeling well on Thursday morning, so I popped the CD into the stereo, sat back in the recliner, took a few sips of my morning coffee, and began to listen to Sea Fangs. Like I said, the cover doesn't give it justice as I was hooked into this romantic adventure tale after the first five minutes. There were many twists and turns that kept me glued. The voice cast was excellent and the sound effects were amazing. Overall, Sea Fangs is my favorite Stories from the Golden Age audiobook and I recommend it to everyone.
